Broccoli

Broccoli is another commodity that is limiting supplies and becoming expensive. The heat we experienced a couple of weeks ago accelerated the broccoli growth, making plants mature early. This means we do not have supplies available now when they were scheduled to be harvested.

Cabbage

Cabbage
steady

Steady supplies from Michigan and Virginia. Prices are higher. Quality is variable.

Carrots

The conventional Carrot market is up slightly as supplies of jumbo and cello continue to be limited. Growing conditions are such that the product is just not getting the size needed for these packs at this time. Demand continues strong on baby and processed product as well… though no change in markets here is expected.

Cauliflower

Cauliflower demand is just fair. Quality and condition have been good overall. Markets look to stay on the weaker side through the week with shippers still dealing on size 9s and 16s.

Celery

steady

Market steady, California growers are poised for this market to rebound. As other items such as lettuce and leaf items become scarce customers will look to hardier commodities to fill trucks. Expect the market to improve going into the holiday months.

Green Onions

Market higher with good demand. Record heat in Mexico has really taken its toll on green onions +120 temps has stunned the product causing a bit of quality and production gap issue.  Various growers have already issued memos advising to expect problems for the next couple of weeks.

Green Leaf Lettuce

Green Leaf supplies, much like the Romaine and Iceberg supplies are becoming limited. Problems in the soil and limiting sunlight hours have created a shortage.

Iceberg Lettuce

Iceberg Lettuce

Iceberg Lettuce

The Iceberg lettuce market is very active. The end of the Salinas season is approaching, and supplies are becoming limited. Problems in the soil have forced growers to ‘walk past’ fields because of poor quality. Smoke filled skies have created shorter sunlight hours, thus not allowing the plants to grow. We may see a very active market through the rest of the Salinas season (October).

Red Leaf Lettuce

Red Leaf Lettuce

While the Iceberg lettuce, Green and Romaine leaf remain active, the Red leaf supplies seem plentiful. I think not a lot of interest in the “other” leaf commodity.

Romaine Lettuce

Romaine Lettuce

Romaine supplies are very limited. Processors, the Gov’t Box program, and Retail demand have gobbled up almost all of the Romaine supplies. Of all the leaf items, Romaine will continue to be active until we reach Yuma (Nov.)
